Root is a hacker and former killer for hire that went searching for the machine, wanting to set it free and allow it sentience. She is a key antagonist/villain upon first entry into the show but when the machine chooses her to be its analog interface she learns to care for others and for humanity, becoming a part of the team, She views the machine as a god and refers to it as a She. Despite this she is still violent, chaotic, misanthropic and transhumanist. She is the machine’s human conduit and does her bidding, which often involves protecting humanity and protecting the machine.
Root always has purpose in the machine and so it is likely she may approach your character if they have useful information or skills, or if they are in danger.
01 | Root is extremely gay.
02 | Root is deaf in one ear [ cw: body horror ] after being subjected to a form of torture that involved removing the stapes of her right ear.
03 | As a result, she has a cochlear implant that is designed solely for the machine to contact her on and does not assist her day to day hearing.
04 | The machine is an all-seeing, all-knowing artificial intelligence, so as a result root often has sensitive information about others that she should not be privy to.
05 | As mentioned Root is misanthropic and transhumanist, meaning she has an overall disdain for humanity as opposed to technology and the machine. In particular she is not fond of men.
06 | She cares about humanity to a certain extent. Mainly she will protect people when she is told to by the machine, but she has a certain ambivalence regarding people. This is extremely different for those that she cares about.
07 | Root feels things in extremes due to a number of factors, including undiagnosed personality disorders, for her it’s either all or nothing.
08 | She is a genius hacker and adept at becoming someone new and disguising herself. She will often be found under the guise of someone else. She was a killer for hire but tends not to kill for the sake of the machine and of her fellow team members who also usually refrain. She definitely makes exceptions to this rule, especially if emotions are involved.
